{Saturday Night at The Movies!!}

Hello lovelies & happy Saturday!! And welcome back to 'Saturday Night at the Movies'!! When I decided to fuse my other blog into this one, I decided that this feature had to stay as everyone seemed to enjoy it so much. But, this time it will be a once a month feature with enough movies for every Saturday to tide you over! It saves me posting every Saturday, which can be a bit much & it leaves you the time to view any you wish & let me know who you got on at the next month's posting!! If you have any movies you want to share, let me hear it in the comments!! I thought themes for the chosen movies would be fun & sometimes I'll just have random picks as well! For this month's movies, I have chosen era's as the theme and some favourites from the 50's to the 90's. I hope you enjoy them & have a great month of Saturday Nights at the Movies!!

Happy weekend dolls

The Girl Can't Help It (50's)

This is a precious movie, it also has some of the best rock n' roll acts of the day including Little Richard, Fats Domino, The Platters, Gene Vincent, The Treniers and lot of others. Edmond O'Brien plays mob boss Murdock, who while serving a term in the federal prison becomes a singing sensation with the hit, 'Rock Around the Rock Pile'. Once he's sprung, Murdock hires impoverished agent Tom Miller (Tom Ewell) not to promote his career, but to turn his curvaceous girlfriend Jerri Jordan (Jayne Mansfield) into a star. But, alas she has no singing or acting talents whatsoever - which she eagerly admits. She's a housewife at heart, all she really wants is to marry Murdock and have children. When Murdock refuses to fullfill her wishes, Jerri falls in love with Tom instead. It's a whirlwind movie, typical of the time. There was a lot of talk about Mansfield because she is a far better actress than the somewhat ditsy character she plays her, but still it's a delightful movie.

Bye Bye Birdie (60's)

Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) is the biggest rock & roll star of the 60's ever to be drafted (this story is taken from real life moment of Elvis being drafted). Aspiring chemist and song writer Albert (Dick Van Dyke) is convinced he can make his fortune and marry his girlfriend Rosie (Janet Leigh), if he gets Conrad on the Ed Sullivan show to kiss a highschool girl goodbye. The lucky girl chosen to be kissed by Conrad Birdie is Kim (Ann Margaret), who happened to just get pinned by her highschool steady Hugo (it was a big thing in those days to get pinned by a boy, it meant you were an item and no one else's, so sweet). Set in Sweet Apple, Ohio, the movie follows the dramatic effects of Conrad Birdie coming to visit, cue fainting, screaming girls, very angry and jealous boyfriends and parents trying to keep their daughters away from Conrad Birdie. Full of fun and catchy tunes and charming sweetness. I remember doing the stage production of this in highschool and it continues to be a huge favourite of mine!

The Boyfriend (70's)

Ken Russell's homage to the Busby Berkeley-style 1930's musical. It's the beginning of the talking movie era. At the Theatre Royal in Portsmouth, England, a second rate theatre troupe run by 'Mr. max' Madeville is in its run of a music called, 'The Boy Friend', though there are usually more people on the stage than there are in the audience. Lead actress, Rita Monroe has just injured her ankle, leaving the assistant manger, who is a shy waif of a woman named Polly Browne (Twiggy) to assume the lead role just before her first scheduled entrance.  There's a lot of pressure on Polly to perform greatly & save the production, but also because there is a famed Hollywood director - De Thrill scouting for his new all talking movie musical. While many of the actors play up to De Thrill, Polly only wants to not embarrass herself and have her real life, mirror the on-stage story as she is in love with the lead actor, Tony Brockhurst. I do love this film, it's charming, theatrical, the sets and costumes are marvellous, I want them all. It's far from a typical Hollywood film and that makes me love it even more.

Sing (80's)

A tuneful teen drama, a woman (Lorraine Bracco) returns to her high school as a teacher. She convinces two students - the school punk, Dominic (Peter Dobson) & a sweet naive Jewish girl, Hannah (Jessica Steen) to become involved in the school's annual 'sing' - a competition between the Seniors and other grades attending Brooklyn schools. If it wasn't for this caring school music teacher, Dominic would have never joined. But, she sees his tremendous talent and together, the two ladies help him mend his self-destructive ways. But, just as the show is ready to go on, the board of Education decides to close the school and refuses to allow the annual event to be held, so instead the neighbourhood and students come together to put the event on one last time out of the school and go out with a bang. This is your classic 80's movie, the hair styles and everything are wild. The thick Brooklyn accents are fun to listen to, I love the dancing. I first watched this back in theatre class and have loved it ever since. I think many will be able to identify with the two lead characters, teenagers who just want to be someone and be loved for who they are and noticed. I never tire of this one.

Empire Records (90's)

A day in the life of the employees of Empire Records. Although, this isn't a typical day because everything seems to be coming to a head for a number of the employees facing personal crisis. And to put more strain on it, they find out that Empire Records is going to be turned into a Music Town. It is up to these wacky employees to figure out a way to raise enough money to help their boss Joe (Anthony LaPaglia) keep the store from changing hands. They also have to deal with problems amongst themselves, love and a has-been spoiled rock star named Rex Manning (Maxwell Caulfield).  Most of you will have seen this film and find something in it you can identify with. I think that's why I love a lot of the films that came out in the 90's, because like some of the 80's, they dealt with the real life issues people face & didn't sugar coat them in any way. Also starring Liv Tyler, Debi Mazar, Robin Tunney, Ethan Embry, Johnny Whitworth & more!
